MCCAIN’S BID FOR REPUBLICAN NOMINATION BOLSTERED

Senator McCain Wins S. Carolina, Military Vote Significant

Senator John McCain came in first in the South Carolina primary election Saturday. This win carries symbolic importance as it was in this primary that eight years ago he lost to George W. Bush, bringing his presidential bid to a halt. The win also bodes extremely well for his campaign and will give him a leg-up in the upcoming Florida primary. In his victory speech, the Senator referred to the significance of the win for the Republican nomination: “You and I are aware that for the last 28 years the winner of the South Carolina primary has been the nominee of our party for the President of the United States.” This success comes in spite of criticism of his campaign commercial on Thursday’s meet the press and mudslinging coming from anti-McCain people.

Senator McCain won 33% of the vote, coming in 3% ahead of Huckabee notwithstanding the large evangelical voting base within the state. McCain’s lead in South Carolina can be attributed to his support from both active military personnel and the veteran community. This group makes up an enormous 14% of the adult population of the state of South Carolina. In particular, the veterans seem to be drawn to McCain and his promises for better veteran care. The upcoming Florida primary will be decisive in securing the Republican Senator’s position.
