MCCAIN TAKES THE LEAD IN THE “TWO-MAN” REPUBLICAN RACE
The Events of Last Week Predict that McCain will be the favorite on Super Tuesday
The Republican candidates are gearing up for Super Tuesday, eagerly anticipating the California primary. The golden state is particularly salient because of its 173 delegates; just fewer than 15% of the total number of delegates needed to win the Republican nomination. The situation has largely come down to a “two-man” race between John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Some are led to believe that since the California contest is reserved for registered Republicans McCain, as a candidate who attracts support from independent, will be put at a disadvantage. The events of the past week, however, paint an entirely different portrait and show Senator McCain to be the favorite. His winning Florida last week proves him capable of winning states with closed Republican contests. In this race, according to Cuban-American and Hispanic voters the immigration policies of McCain were preferable to those of Romney. On Thursday McCain had an NBC spot where he addressed the concerns of Latino voters in California. He also won the endorsements of Mayor Giuliani and Governor Schwarzenegger, which may hold sway. For now, McCain is ahead in the national polls at 43% and it remains to be seen what developments will take place tomorrow. This week McCain will touch on more of California’s concerns in an interview with a local paper: The Davis Enterprise.
